Fun Friday! I’m being watched

I haven’t posted a Fun Friday activity in a couple of weeks.  I love to find activities to make our Friday’s more fun and that can get the kid’s imaginations going.  Today I gave them some self-adhesive googly eyes and then sat back and watched as they made regular objects from our house come to life.

Here are some of our favorites:

4th of July Festive Food

4th of July Recipes

Our 4th of July festivities are in full swing!  Sparklers, Pop-its and Red Vines are bought and now we’re just getting excited for the fireworks.  To go a long with our festivities we had a fun patriotic dinner tonight.

Fruit Rockets:

Fruit Rocket for 4th of July

I have to laugh at the fact that my boys will eat anything if it comes in the form/shape of something they like and what little boy doesn’t like rockets?  These are pretty self-explanatory.  I used 4th of July party picks, strawberries, blueberries and bananas.  Yummy!

Patriotic Pasta:Colored Pasta - 4th of July recipe

We made some red and blue pasta by adding food coloring to the water while the noodles cooked. And, um yes, you have to cook them in separate pots, just in case you were wondering how I magically separated the colors. ;) . And we topped it off with our favorite  alfredo sauce.  Pasta couldn’t possibly get more patriotic than that!

Toothpaste Box Firecrackers

Firecrackers!

I’m SO excited to share these today because they turned out so cute!  For the crafts I do with my boys I try to use items that we can find around the house.  We go through a lot of paper products and I’ve been trying to save a few (without becoming a hoarder) to use on our projects.

I have a wooden firecracker decoration that I got around the time I got married (many moons ago) and it looked easy to replicate with toothpaste boxes, but I think this one turned out cuter than the original.Firecrackers - 4th of July

We used different sizes of toothpaste boxes and cut one to be shorter for the front.  Then we painted them red, white and blue.

Once dry we tied them up with some red yarn and added some foam star stickers for decoration.  I was originally going to glue some ribbon to the top for the firecracker but found some firework toothpicks that I had bought at Oriental Trading a long time ago and they worked perfectly!!  We had to use a screw to get a small hole in the top and then inserted the toothpicks.

This is one kid’s craft that I am happy to display in the front room.  So cute!

Festive 4th of July Cookies

4th of July recipes

This week my boys have been getting excited for the 4th of July so I thought I’d share some of the fun activities and 4th of July recipes we have been making.

We pretty much love making and eating sugar cookies so I whipped up some of my Grandma’s famous (at least to my family and friends) old-fashioned sugar cookies. (I’ll have to share the recipe soon)

You can see that I had plenty of help (just look at the grin on his face).  He insisted on rolling out each batch of cookies, so yes these took us awhile.  But we’re not making cookies, we’re making memories right? (I have to keep telling myself that).

Monday Motivation: 25 Ways to Get Out of the Mommy Rut!

25 ways to get out of a rut. www.thejoysofboys.com

In a rut?

As I mentioned last week I have been sick!  Not just the “take some Vitamin C and sleep it off” sort of sick but the “If you hadn’t seen a dr you would be admitted by now” type of sick.  I hadn’t felt so horrible in a really long time.  Luckily I’m on the mend and the meds are kicking in (s l o w l y) but I can at least get out of bed now and have somewhat started getting back to reality.   But in getting back to reality I realized that I have hardly left the house in 10 days, and that those 10 days of solitary confinement have really rattled my nerves and put me on edge with my kids.   I love my boys but I am definitely starting to feel in a rut.   I recognize this feeling and have been here many times before so I started listing some things that moms can do to get out of the mommy rut.

1. Get up and get dressed. And I mean put on some real clothes (no sweats/exercise clothes which I live in most days),and do your hair and makeup.  Yes, your kids might ask you where you are going but you will feel 100 times better than if you stayed in your grubby sweats all day.

2. Buy something new. For me it doesn’t have to be big or expensive to make me feel better.  Even just a new song for my ipod or a new shirt or outfit. It’s okay to splurge on yourself everyonce in awhile.  We spoil our kids all the time, why not spoil ourselves just a bit.
